Khumbu Glacier Environmental Monitoring System
Project Background
Commissioned by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, this project established Nepal's first comprehensive glacial monitoring system in the Khumbu region providing real-time data on glacial movement, meltwater volume, and environmental conditions.
Our Role
AMRC designed and implemented the monitoring network, including installation of automated weather stations, GPS-based glacier movement sensors, and water quality testing equipment at five strategic locations.
Outcomes
The monitoring system now provides continuous data to researchers worldwide. The first year of data revealed previously unknown patterns of diurnal glacier movement and identified three new meltwater springs.
