Sustainable Tourism in the Annapurna Region: Balancing Growth and Conservation
The Challenge
The Annapurna Conservation Area (ACA) welcomes over 180,000 trekkers annually, making it Nepal's most visited protected area. This influx brings economic benefits to local communities but also poses significant environmental challenges.
Community-Based Tourism
AMRC's research team spent three months studying community-based tourism initiatives across 15 villages in the ACA. We found that villages with locally-managed homestay programs retained 78% of tourism revenue within the community, compared to just 23% in areas dominated by external operators.
Environmental Impact
Our assessment revealed that trail erosion has increased by 35% on the most popular routes over the past decade. However, communities that implemented AMRC's recommended trail management practices saw a 40% reduction in erosion within just two seasons.
Recommendations
We propose a three-tier tourism management framework that balances visitor access with conservation priorities, including seasonal visitor caps, mandatory guide certification, and community-managed conservation funds.
